Anger is a basic feeling that we all feel from time to time.
However, anger is often a “secondary emotion” – meaning that there is another emotion underneath it that we are less comfortable feeling or expressing, which has often been building for some time.
It is kind of like a volcano: every once in a while we see volcanoes erupt with hot lava. What we don’t see underneath the volcano is the earth moving, pressure building, and the lava bubbling up.
Viewing anger as a volcano can help us to manage our anger better. If we can identify what is going on under the surface and get the "message" from our feelings, we can DO SOMETHINGabout it before it becomes EXPLOSIVE.
Here are some feelings that are often underneath anger:
Sadness
Anxiety/Worry
Loss
Embarrassment
Fear
Disappointment
Shame
Frustration
Abandonment
Jealousy
Guilt
Hurt
Rejection
Overwhelmed
Disrespected
